FIRST RESEARCH BY THE INSTITUTE OF LEGAL RESPONSIBILITY IN CANON LAW
Review
In Legal Liability in Church Law of Medieval Ukraine, Ivanna Matseliukh provides the first comprehensive study of the origins, evolution, and institutional framework of ecclesiastical sanctions on Ukrainian territories from the Byzantine era through the Rus’ state and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth (5th–17th centuries). Drawing on legal sources and the practice of church courts, the monograph examines the grounds and functions of penalties, the forms of legal coercion against offenders of ecclesiastical norms, and the statutes and judgments that governed clergy and laity. Special emphasis is placed on the comparative development of Byzantine and Rus’ traditions, the growth of procedural law, and the jurisdiction of the Kyiv Metropolis. This work illuminates the role of ecclesiastical jurisprudence in shaping Ukraine’s legal heritage and offers a foundational resource for courses in the History of Ukrainian Law, Canon Law, and comparative legal history.
